These Surprising New G-SHOCK Watches Help Protect the Galápagos

During his famed voyage on the HMS Beagle, Charles Darwin noted about the Galápagos Islands that “by far the most remarkable feature in the natural history of this archipelago…is that the different islands to a considerable extent are inhabited by a different set of beings…I never dreamed that islands, about 50 or 60 miles apart, and most of them in sight of each other, formed of precisely the same rocks, placed under a quite similar climate, rising to a nearly equal height, would have been differently tenanted.”

This observation would inspire his groundbreaking work On the Origin of Species. Almost 190 years after the conclusion of his epic voyage of discovery aboard the HMS Beagle, the Charles Darwin Foundation is dedicated to environmental conservation in the Galápagos Islands. To that end the Foundation has partnered with Casio in the creation of two new G-SHOCKs to build awareness for the critical need to protect the Galápagos Islands’ dynamic ecosystem.

The two models represent the third collaboration between Casio and the Charles Darwin Foundation and celebrates two animals unique to the Galápagos. The GAB2100CD1A4 honors the native marine iguana, the only only extant lizard that swims and forages in the sea, in a red and black colorway, while the black and white GAB2100CD1A7 was inspired by the Galápagos penguin, the only penguin to thrive in the Equator’s tropical waters.

Each features their animal as an indicator on the function sub-dial at 9 o’clock. Both pieces are treated to ocean wave-inspired patterns and a map of the Galápagos on the dial. The pair uses the brand’s Tough Solar charging for power and come on bio-based resin straps.

As they are G-SHOCKs, the watches are designed with a shock-resistant architecture built to withstand all but the most severe impacts as well as 200 meters of water resistance. Additionally the pair offers a Bluetooth connection, world time for 48 cities, a 1/100-second stopwatch, a countdown timer, five daily alarms, and a Super Illuminator double LED light.

The G-SHOCK x Charles Darwin Foundation watches are available at select retailers or at gshock.casio.com/us for $170.
